This is going to be an amazing four day workshop with Kim Johnson Nechtman AWS, NWS, TWSA, August 25-28, 2025. Kim captures life and uses color to express the joy of living while painting portraits of people and animals. This week will be filled with a variety of subjects, something for everyone! The final day we will paint shorebirds and will open up for a limited number, for those unable to attend a four day workshop.

Day one we will paint animals with spots or stripes, use your own photos and have your drawing complete on watercolor paper prior to class. Think giraffe, zebra, striped cats. If you do not have photos, search online for free photo sources.

Day two we will work on facial features. Use small sheets of watercolor paper 1/8th sheet works well. We will work on the eye, mouth, and nose.

Day three we will work on a portrait using the features we learned on Tuesday. Find a photo with good lighting and have the drawing complete before class so we can paint.

Day Four What a blast it will be, the last day, we will paint shore birds. Use your own photo or use Kims.

Kim Johnson

I love to capture life, to use color to express the joy of living combined with the pleasure I get from the medium. As life brings new experiences to me as a person, there’s an exponential increase in confidence to my expression of life through color. I particularly enjoy the challenge of carefully working out a composition without losing spontaneity.

Most of my paints are Daniel Smith, but I also have some Winsor and Newton, Holbein, or M. Graham on my palette. I paint on 140 lbs cold or rough press paper and it’s usually Arches or Saunders Waterford.
